West African Examinations Council (WAEC) yesterday released the results
of 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
A total number of candidates that sat for the examination was 1.544,234, out of the number 878,040 candidates representing 52. 97 per cent obtained credit in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
This was disclosed by the Head of the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council, Mr. Olu Adenipekun at the WAEC office Yaba, Lagos.
Adenipekun, while speaking with newsmen affirmed improvement in 2016 WASSCE, saying candidates actually put more effort , knowing fully well that the Council would not compromise its standard.
He said the percentage of candidates that obtained five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics in the WASSCE for school candidates in 2014 and 2015 were 31.28 per cent and 36.68 per cent repectively.
According to him, Out of the total number of candidates who sat the examination, 1,393, 907 candidates representing 90.26 per cent have their results fully released, while 158,718 candidates, representing 9.74 per cent have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to the candidates and schools in the course of registration or writing the examination.
The HNO explained that such errors are being corrected by the Council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released subsequently.
He went on: “of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 1,014,573 candidates, representing 65.70 per cent obtained six credits and above, 1,167,484 candidates representing 75.60 per cent obtained five credits and above, while 1,282,204 candidates representing 83.3 per cent obtained credit and above in four subjects.
However, the results of 137,295 candidates, representing 8.89 per cent are being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractice.
Mr. Adenipekun stressed that the cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council in due course for consideration.
He added that a total number of 133 visually challenged candidates registered for and sat the examination. From this figure, 23 candidates, representing 17. 29 per cent obtained credit in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
In a related development, the HNO appealed to the States that are owing the Council to pay their debt in order for their candidates to be able to access their results.
